Signs in Vedic Astrology

In Vedic astrology (Jyotisha) the zodiac is divided into twelve equal signs of 30° each, called Rashis. They run from Aries (Mesha) to Pisces (Meena) and form the backbone of every horoscope — the sign on your ascendant, the sign your Moon occupies (your Rashi), and the sign of every planet shape your personality, mind and destiny.

Unlike Western astrology, which uses the tropical zodiac tied to the seasons, Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac tied to the fixed stars. The difference (the ayanamsha, about 24° today) means your Vedic sign is often the one before your familiar Western sign. Vedic astrology also gives the greatest weight to the Moon sign, not the Sun sign.

What defines a sign — element, quality and lord

Every Rashi carries three signatures that shape its nature:

Element (Tattva) — Fire (Agni), Earth (Prithvi), Air (Vayu) or Water (Jala). Fire signs are dynamic and driven, Earth signs practical and steady, Air signs intellectual and social, Water signs emotional and intuitive.
Quality (Guna / modality) — Movable (Chara), Fixed (Sthira) or Dual (Dwiswabhava). Movable signs initiate, fixed signs sustain, dual signs adapt.
Ruling planet (Swami) — each sign is owned by a planet (e.g. Mars rules Aries and Scorpio, Venus rules Taurus and Libra). The lord's strength and placement colour how the sign expresses itself in your chart.

Sun sign, Moon sign and Ascendant — which is 'your' sign?

People usually know their Sun sign, but in Vedic astrology the Moon sign (Rashi) is primary — it governs the mind and emotions and is used for dashas, transits and most predictions. The Ascendant (Lagna), the sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth, defines the body, life direction and the whole house framework.

Each sign also spans parts of the 27 Nakshatras (lunar mansions) — the finer 13°20' divisions that refine a sign's meaning — and is owned by one of the nine planets.
