Significance
Cheti Chand is the Sindhi New Year and celebrates the birth of Ishtadeva Uderolal, revered as Jhulelal, the patron saint of the Sindhi community and an incarnation of the water god Varuna.
It falls at the start of the Sindhi month of Chet and is the community's most important festival.
Rituals
Devotees worship Jhulelal, take out a Baharana Sahib procession to water, and perform the Chaliho ceremony. Prayers are offered before a symbolic waterpot (baharana) with a diya, and community feasts and cultural programmes are held.
How the date is fixed
Cheti Chand falls on the second tithi of Chaitra Shukla paksha, the day after Ugadi/Gudi Padwa.
