Significance
Ekadashi, the eleventh tithi of each lunar fortnight, is a sacred day of fasting dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Observing the Ekadashi vrat is believed to cleanse sins, bestow spiritual merit and lead towards liberation (moksha).
There are 24 Ekadashis in a year (26 in an adhika-maasa year), each with its own name and story.
Rituals
Devotees fast from grains and beans — some keep a waterless (nirjala) fast — worship Vishnu, keep a night vigil with bhajans, and break the fast (paran) the next morning within the prescribed window. Nirjala and Vaikuntha (Putrada) Ekadashi are held especially meritorious.
