Significance
Hariyali Teej, the "green teej," celebrates the reunion of Goddess Parvati with Lord Shiva after her long penance, and the arrival of the monsoon. It is a festival of married women who pray for marital bliss and the well-being of their husbands.
The lush green of the rain-washed land gives the festival its name.
Rituals
Women dress in green, adorn their hands with mehndi, wear bangles, and swing on flower-decked jhulas singing folk songs. Many observe a fast and worship Shiva-Parvati. Married daughters receive the sindhara gift from their parents.
How the date is fixed
Hariyali Teej falls on the Tritiya (third tithi) of Shravana Shukla paksha, at the height of the monsoon.
