Significance

Holi, the festival of colours, celebrates the arrival of spring, the triumph of good over evil, and the divine love of Radha and Krishna. It is a day of joy, forgiveness and renewal when social barriers dissolve in a riot of colour.

It follows Holika Dahan and is the second, festive day known as Rangwali Holi or Dhulandi.

Rituals

People smear each other with gulal, drench friends with coloured water, sing and dance to the beat of dhol, and share sweets like gujiya and the drink thandai. Old grievances are forgiven with the greeting "bura na mano, Holi hai."

How the date is fixed

Holi is played on the Pratipada of the Chaitra Krishna paksha — the day after Phalguna Purnima (Holika Dahan). The date shown above is for your location.
