Significance
Nag Panchami is dedicated to the worship of serpent gods (Nagas), revered in Hindu tradition as protectors and symbols of fertility and cosmic energy. Serpents are associated with Lord Shiva and with Sheshnag, on whom Vishnu reclines.
The day seeks the blessings of the Nagas and protection from snakebite.
Rituals
Devotees offer milk, flowers and turmeric to snake idols, images or living serpents, and worship at anthills and Naga temples. Fasting and drawing of snake motifs at the doorway are common. Harming snakes and digging the earth are avoided on this day.
