Significance
Ram Navami celebrates the birth of Lord Rama, the seventh avatar of Vishnu, born to King Dasharatha and Queen Kaushalya in Ayodhya. He is revered as the ideal of dharma, truth and righteous rule (Ram Rajya).
The festival crowns the nine days of Chaitra Navratri.
Rituals
Devotees fast, read the Ramayana and Ramcharitmanas, and celebrate Rama's birth at noon — his believed birth-hour — with bhajans, jhankis and the rocking of an idol in a cradle. Temples, especially at Ayodhya, hold grand celebrations.
