Significance

Sankranti marks the Sun's transit from one zodiac sign into the next. There are twelve Sankrantis in a year, each named after the sign the Sun enters — Makar, Kumbha, Meena and so on. Makar Sankranti and Mesha Sankranti are the most celebrated.

The moment of transit and the surrounding punya kaal are auspicious for bathing, charity and worship.

Rituals

Devotees bathe in sacred rivers, offer arghya to the Sun, and give charity of grains, sesame and clothing during the punya kaal. Each Sankranti carries its own regional customs and, for many, marks the solar month's beginning.
