The Mundan (Chudakarana) Sanskar

Mundan — the first tonsure of a child's hair — is a Sanskar usually performed in the first, third or fifth year. Tradition confines it to the auspicious Uttarayana months, which is why the year's list has a gap in the monsoon and later months.

The classical rules used here

  • Months — Chaitra, Vaishakha, Jyeshtha, Ashadha (before Devshayani), Magha and Phalguna.
  • Weekdays — Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
  • Tithis — Dwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami, Dashami, Ekadashi and Trayodashi.
  • Nakshatras — Mrigashira, Ashwini, Pushya, Hasta, Punarvasu, Chitra, Swati, Shravana, Dhanishtha, Shatabhisha and Jyeshtha.

Some traditions also avoid the child's birth month and birth nakshatra; consult your family custom or an astrologer for these finer points.

How the timings depend on your city

Each window is clamped to the weekday's vaara — sunrise to the next sunrise — so its start and end shift with your local sunrise. Set your city above to see the correct times.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mundan is confined to the Uttarayana months (roughly Magha through Ashadha), so there are no windows in the monsoon and following months.

Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. (Friday is avoided for a girl child in some traditions.)
